(Changed to Place type, per conv w CRH - rjaffe)

National battlefield site, National memorial, National monument, National park, National register of historic place.
The list of options presented in the Place Type field is based on Getty's Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN; http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/guidelines/tgn_4_6_appendix_f_place_types.html). Because the TGN standard alone has two parts, comprising well over 100 values - an unwieldy amount for a pull-down menu - we selected a representative set for our contribution. In addition, we added seven values: collection site, country code, general region, locality, national division (in TGN as division-national), state province and water-body (in TGN as "body of water"). Users will easily be able to configure the values as they wish.
NOTE: "City," which is in TGN, was omitted from the option list as originally contributed in favor of 'Municipality.' We expect to add 'City' to the options as part of a bug fix in an upcoming release.

  1. FYI: Here at SMK we are very pleased with the UCB Place Authority Schema, and would love to see it contributed back to the CollectionSpace Core. It exceeds our immediate needs, but it looks very good.

  2. It would be good to have both a place type for the whole place (e.g., this place is a cave site), and also a separate place name type (e.g., this is a native name for the place).

    1. Good point, but for this initial version the schema above has already been implemented.  There are some fields in th ename schema that can help (notes) though they are not structured in an ideal way.

  3. I don't see how preferred and non-preferred terms are handled here (beyond marking as historical or current).  What do you do with multiple terms, all current, but only one of which is preferred? For instance, "Emeryville shellmound" and "CA-Ala-309" — we prefer CA-Ala-309, the preferred (and current) archaeological site designation, but Emeryville shellmound is also a current term, just a popular current term.

    1. A couple things here.  Ideally we would be creating a new Place record for this term and relating the two in some way Using a non-hierarchical term relationship that will handle synonyms and these kinds of relationships between terms.  Even within a single record however I think the Place Name Status field could be "current" for multiple names in the multi-value list.  One term would be preferred by having its radiobutton checked.

  4. The place name status is a controlled list that could, presumably, be customized for each tenant.  I listed only 3 examples in use by HAVRC ("Current", "Historical" or "Both") but there's no reason why you couldn't modify this list to include descriptors like "Current vernacular" or "Current native."  The CDWA schema also has an Other Names Flag field (see http://www.getty.edu/research/publications/electronic_publications/cdwa/30place.html#other which is designed to hold things like "official name" "pseudonym", "site name", or "ISO 3-number".  It would be cleaner, in my opinion, to add this field to the place name row but in the short term perhaps the data could be loaded with the compound descriptors in the place status field that would allow the data to be parsed and reloaded down the line should that field be added to the array.
