"Hello, world." - version 0.1 Release

The technical team is working implement an initial development release of CollectionSpace -v0.1 "Hello, world". The primary goal of the release will be to integrate the three major componments of CollectionSpace -the UI, Application, and Services components. The functionality of the release will be based on a very small subset of requirements for the "Object Entry" procedure.

1. Source Code Analysis

Notes

We're analyzing a wide range of open source tools with an eye to using them in CollectionSpace:

  • eXist
  • OpenCollection
  • Fedora
  • Alfresco
  • Omeka
  • Archivists' Toolkit
  • And more...

Status

We've completed analyses of OpenCollection, Omeka, lucene, and eXist. We're in the midst of analyzing MySQL. We've completed initial analyses of Alfresco, Fedora, and Nuxeo as platforms. We've taken a close look at Omeka.

Who's involved?

Dan, Carl, Patrick, Glen (UCB) and Susan (UCB)

2. Defining a Strawman Technical Roadmap

Notes

In an iterative fashion, we're sketching out a short-term roadmap of tasks for the technical team.

Status

A very rough draft has been posted to the wiki, comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Who's involved?

First draft: Colin; Feedback and refinements: the whole team

3. Draft a SOA Methodology

Notes

Assemble an approach and set of techniques for service oriented architecture modeling and implementation

Status

In progress. Met with the UCB Kuali team about their tools, design models, approaches. Very useful, and we are borrowing heavily from that. Posted extensive notes around teh SOA methodology, and have been working with Steve Masover to clean this up into a more narrative form.

4. Draft Development and Platform Technical Recommendations

Notes

Assemble Technical recommendations for development and testing, and for the services platform

Status

In progress. Have reviewed and discussed the Kuali development platform recommendations, and will borrow some of what they are using. Have been narrowing down the candidates for the deployment platform, and will soon make initial recommendations here.

5. Dataset building and scoping

Notes

Analysing the size of collections and typical contents, creating fake data, released real data, etc. A second smaller dataset from a real museum is in progress as well (need to work out anonymization requirements, etc.

Status

In progress. First, entirely artificial dataset built; version two (in progress) to customize parameters to figures from Angela. Have agreement in principle to use a real, anonymized dataset from one of the UCB museums, but have not had time to pursue this.

Who's involved?

Dan, Carl, Patrick

6. Server-side Presentation Framework Evaluation

Notes

Reviewing the range of web presentation technologies in several languages, including Ruby, Python, Java, and PHP

Status

Currently assembling the list of prospective frameworks.

Who's involved?

Colin, Dan

7. Analysing Existing Projects

Notes

Analysing the implicit structure in related applications developed here (eg manuscript digitisation management software) to try to surface them for architecture design.

Status

In progress.
